Hermano lejano


During his term as Mayor in San Salvador from 1988 to 1994, Armando Calderón Sol built the Monument to "Hermano Lejano" in the Montserrat neighborhood at the city’s entrance.  The Monument is a tribute to Salvadorans who emigrated from the country in search of a better future and recognizes their continued financial contributions to the national economy.  This Monument indirectly references the war during which many people left El Salvador and the period of transition in which many people return to the country to live or visit.  In this way “Hermano Lejano” acknowledges that a significant part of the national identity and culture is made up of Salvadorans living outside of El Salvador.
